Done is Better than Perfect
Fellow over-thinkers and over-planners unite! You know who you are and I know you have been “almost ready” to launch your business for months, years, or even decades, because there is always just one more thing to figure out. I see you, I was you, until I signed up for a workshop and was told “done is better than perfect”, which has stuck with me since. Boy oh boy, did I need to hear that. KCS would not be a thing if I hadn’t heard that. I would still be a corporate girly if I hadn’t been told that. Hear me out, you are more ready to take the leap than you think you are. The thing holding you back isn’t a gap in your business. It’s a universal belief that everything needs to be perfect before you can begin. These were my non-negotiables that had to be in place, and what I found could wait.
Before you start, you need a clear offer. What are you selling, for how much, what does it cost to you, and what are some other costs associated with your offer? Once you know that, the business side is done. Pretty simple if you ask me.
Next, you need a way for people to contact you. Social media has made this so easy, so set yourself up on your platform of choice. Notice how I said your platform, not platforms. Just one is enough.
Finally, the money part of things. You need a way to get paid. In Canada, we have e-transfer which is so simple and it works perfectly fine to start off. I would also strongly recommend opening a separate business bank account so that you can start off with a strong financial foundation and not have to scramble once the orders start flowing in.
That’s it! Notice how short the “need” list is.
Let’s quickly go over what most think should be on the “needs” list but are actually just “wants”. These include a perfect website, a professional logo, accounting software, business cards, a fully fleshed-out business plan, and an incorporated company.
So, why does waiting feel safer? As an over-thinker, preparation feels productive. Tweaking your logo, redoing your website, taking one more course, it all feels like forward motion. And, some of it genuinely is. But, there’s a version of preparation that is truly just fear in disguise. If you’re being honest with yourself, are these preparations just delay tactics to avoid the scary parts? Yes, the parts where you put your offer out there and find out if people are actually going to say yes. The only way to learn is to start. You probably already have most of those “needs” ready, so what are you truly waiting for? As Phil Knight said “just do it”. Every successful business owner started before they were 100% ready.
Now, what actually happens when you start imperfectly? Your first website won’t be your last. Your first offer will likely evolve. Your prices will definitely change. Your branding will get clearer. All of that is normal and expected. None of it has to happen before you make your first couple sales. The businesses that make it aren’t the ones that launched perfectly. Its the businesses that launched, adjusted, learned, and adjusted some more. Done is better than perfect.
Here’s my challenge for you. If you’ve been sitting on an idea, pick the smallest possible version of it and share it below. You might just find your first conversation, who turns into your first customer.
